ANALYSIS: NHDems House Walkout Latest Example of Party’s Struggle With Gender Politics

During Women’s History Month, Rep. Erica Layon (R-Derry) used unanimous consent time on the House floor to argue women are being silenced, prompting Democrats to withdraw consent and ultimately walk out of the chamber, NH Journal reported. House Majority Leader Jason Osborne weighed in afterward on social media.

As NH Journal described it, the exchange began when Layon spoke during the period reserved for members to raise issues they care about.

When Layon used the moment to argue that women are currently being “silenced,” pressured to accept the “erasing of women’s spaces and women’s sports,” Rep. Alissandra Murray (D-Manchester) withdrew consent.

The House was forced to vote on whether to let Layon continue. When it did, the response from across the aisle was immediate.

When the House voted in Layon’s favor, Democrats stormed out of the chamber.

NH Journal highlighted the choice Democrats made in how to respond to the speech.

Instead, they sent a male member — Rep. Nicholas Germana (D-Keene)– up to the mic to make the case that a woman shouldn’t be allowed to speak about a women’s issue during Women’s History Month.
