NHGOP Using Tax Day to Set Income Tax Trap for Dems. It Appears to Be Working.

House Republicans scheduled a Tax Day Ways and Means Committee hearing on their “New Hampshire Advantage Amendment,” CACR 12, which would put a ballot question to voters on banning a state income tax. As reported by NH Journal, Republicans said they were responding to Democratic complaints about process, and expressed satisfaction that progressives were rallying around the income tax issue.

NH Journal reported that Republicans were welcoming the attention the hearing was drawing. One GOP figure said the energy on the other side was a gift.

“I, for one, am grateful that the progressives are so strongly rallying support for an income tax,” a Republican political operative told NHJournal on background.

The NH Journal report described what the amendment would do if approved. It would let voters decide the question directly.

CACR 12 would place a question on the ballot asking Granite Staters to ban an income tax.

According to NH Journal, the hearing was framed as a direct answer to the Democratic leader’s earlier objections about process.

“We took the Democrats’ concerns seriously. And now on Wednesday, we will give Democrats their public hearing,” the House GOP caucus posted on social media.

NH Journal reported that an organized opposition effort was driving turnout against the amendment ahead of the hearing.

As of late Tuesday night, more than 900 people had submitted online testimony opposing the anti-tax amendment, while just 729 had sent testimony in support.
