State House Republicans accused Democrats of proposing more than $1 billion in tax increases since the start of the year, a charge Democrats deny. As reported by NH Journal, GOP leaders pointed to bills including property tax hikes on second homes, a higher tobacco tax, and an increased meals and rooms tax.
NH Journal reported the figures Republicans put forward in a statement.
“The very first thing Democrats did this year was propose $640 million in tax hikes on the House floor,” the House GOP caucus said in a statement.

Republicans listed specific bills they said would raise taxes.
Among them are property tax hikes on second homes ( HB 1580 ), increases in the tobacco tax ( HB 1596 ), and a higher meals and rooms tax ( HB 1480 ).

According to NH Journal, Senate Majority Leader Regina Birdsell said Democrats had stopped hiding their intentions.
“We believe your paycheck belongs to you, and New Hampshire Republicans will continue to fight against these reckless policies.”
