Former Executive Councilor Andru Volinsky and allies held a press conference promoting a state income tax to fund education spending, saying they hoped to start a conversation. As reported by NH Journal, the proposal instead drew uniformly negative responses from across the political spectrum, including from prominent Democrats.

According to NH Journal, Simpson reinforced the caucus position in a follow-up statement.
“New Hampshire House Democrats will not support an income tax. House Democrats are fighting every day for our Fair Chance Agenda, and an income tax has not and will not be considered,” Simpson added.

The plan’s backers urged a focus on policy rather than politics, NH Journal reported.
Volinsky, Rep. Thomas Oppel (D-Canaan), and former Democratic candidate for governor Mark Fernald pleaded with the press and public to focus on the policy proposal rather than the politics.
